Defending Premier League champions Chelsea suffered a 3-2 defeat in a high-voltage game against spirited Burnley side on Saturday.
It wasn’t a very encouraging start for the title defence by the Stamford Bridge outfit which lost defender Gary Cahill in 14th minute of the game, after the Englishman rashly threw himself on Steven Defour in order to retain the ball.
Capitalising on the reduced defence of opposition, Burnley’s spearhead Sam Vokes smashed a brilliant volley past Thibaut Courtois in the 24th minute.
With 6 minutes left in the first half, Stephen Ward scored a stunner and doubled lead for the visitors. Vokes then completed the first half rout of Chelsea with a powerful header.
Antonio Conte’s men considerably improved defensively in the second half of the game, but riding high on confidence Burnely kept troubling the home side.
New recruit from Real Madrid, Alvaro Morata came off the bench later in the game and pulled one back for his side. But Chelsea’s hopes of salvaging anything from the game were dented after playmaker Cesc Fabregas was shown a red card.
David Luiz made it 3-2 for 9-men Chelsea in the 88th minute.
