India bundled up Sri Lanka’s first innings at 135 runs and tightened grip over hosts as they were playing at 19/1 on the second day of the final Test on Sunday at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka.
India has enforced follow on and the hosts now face a monumental challenge of overturning the deficit of 352 runs and taking a lead on Virat Kohli’s men.
Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal tried to get his side to a respectable score with a knock of 48 runs but he departed bereft of a significant contribution from any other player.
Wicket-keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella (29) assisted his captain by forging a 63 partnership with him but Sri Lanka collapsed like a house of cards after Dickwella’s dismissal.
India’s seamer Mohammed Shami struck early and removed two top order Sri Lankan batsemen while Ashwin also contributed with two scalps.
The star of the day was spinner Kuldeep Yadav who dismantled the batting middle order of the hosts, picking up 4 wickets at the expense of 40 runs.
Earlier, India posted 487 in their first innings, thanks to Shikhar Dhawan (119) and Lokesh Rahul’s (85) opening stand of 188 runs. A quick-fire century from tailender Hardik Pandya (108) ensured his side a comfortable score.
