Former England footballer and TV pundit Ray Wilkins has bet his money on wantaway Diego Costa who was the top scorer for London club previous season over Blues current main man Alvaro Morata. Wilkins who has earlier worked with Chelsea as an assistant manger believes Alvaro Morata is far from the qualities Diego Costa possessed and that both of them should have been at the club if Chelsea have to put forth a strong title defence in the ongoing season.
Costa hasn’t featured for Chelsea since a reported message from manager Antonio Conte telling him that he is no more required at the club and that the manager is looking forward to the season without him. The 28-year old striker has since not turned out at the Stamford Bridge and is said to be waiting for his former club Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban to be upheld so he can secure a permanent move back to Spain.
Interacting with Premier League Daily, Wilkins said, “I see a better footballer in Morata he has got better movement, better control and also is quicker but when I look at the beast in Costa, he upsets people. I’d much rather have Costa than Morata”
Morata was brought in this season by Chelsea from Real Madrid for a staggering fee of around 70 million euros and was tipped by many to be a worthy replacement for Costa who was expected not to feature again for Chelsea. The Spaniard had a rather forgetful start but has since improved and scored 3 goals in his five Premier League appearances for the Blues this season.
Losing an established striker like Costa has been a huge blow for Chelsea but since Conte executed it with confidence, he must have thought of a plan B to get those goals back. However, Ray Wilkins believes the club would have been a strong challenger in the league had they kept both their strikers at pace and played them together upfront.
“Why we [Chelsea] haven’t got both, I don’t know. He should be at Stamford Bridge and then Chelsea would have a proper strike force,” he said.
“I just can’t see why Costa is still in Brazil, playing five-a-side football on a beach with his mates.”
So far Chelsea’s season has been a moderate one too to be very precise as the Blues haven’t pulled off any extraordinary display in their title defence campaign but they have had positives in form of Belgian striker Mitchy Batshuayi who has shown some great composure going forward and has scored a goal in Chelsea’s 6-0 victory against Qarabag in the Champions League opener.
Chelsea currently sit at the 3rd spot on the table below rivals Manchester City and United. The Blues will next take on Nottingham Forest F.C. in the 3rd round of English Football League Cup.
