In a big setback to Australian cricket team, skipper Steve Smith has been ruled out of three-match T20I series against India due to a shoulder injury. Vice Captain David Warner will be leading the side in Smith’s absence.

Smith had injured his shoulder while diving on the field during fifth ODI against India. He will be replaced by Marcus Stoinis in the squad for the series. “Smith landed awkwardly on his right shoulder while diving in the field during the fifth ODI against India last Sunday,” team doctor Richard Saw stated in a press release by Cricket Australia.

“Following the match he complained of shoulder soreness, which has not settled and is restricting his ability to bat and throw,” Cricket Australia stated. Subsequently he has had an MRI scan which has excluded serious injury, but we believe the best course of action is for him to not continue to aggravate his shoulder and allow it to recover,” the release further added.

Steve Smith will be returning home to recover from the injury and is likely to be fit for next month’s Ashes against England. Australia will take on India in first match of the T20 series at JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Saturday. Aussies are going into the series after suffering 1-4 humiliating defeat at the hands of Indians in recently concluded One Day International (ODI) series and will be hoping to get back to winning ways.
