Thane: Nine persons were arrested on charges of unlawful assembly and rioting in Kulgaon Badlapur area of the district following clashes between two groups, police said on Saturday.

The arrests were made late last night after two groups of children clashed with each other in Vangani village during the Holi celebrations, API Dhananjay Pore of the Kulgaon Police station said.

"The fight between two groups of children led to several men joining the two sides and creating ruckus. It all started over smearing of colours in the festival," he said.

Members of both the groups filed cross complaints against each other at Kulgaon police station. One of the groups belonged to a minority community.

Following the incident, tension prevailed in Wangani and additional police force was rushed to maintain law and order. The situation is under control, police said.

Further investigation into the episode is on.
