The curfew was re-clamped in Jammu district on Wednesday after 40 people were injured in clashes late on Tuesday night as the Kashmir valley remained calm for a second straight day after weeks of protests.

In other districts of Jammu region, curfew was relaxed for varying periods in Kishtwar, Udhampur and Samba as the three-day 'jail bharo andolan' called by Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS) to demand 100 acres of land for the Amarnath shrine board entered its last day.

In Srinagar, National Security Advisor M K Narayanan met Governor N N Vohra to review the security situation, official sources said.

Narayanan accompanied by Intelligence Bureau Director P C Haider and other officials from the Union Home Ministry met Vohra, his three advisors and other top officials of the state administration.

During the meeting, a proposed march by separatists to Idgah in the interior city also came up for discussion, official sources said.

The situation in the valley was largely peaceful with most shops, offices and banks conducting routine business.

Vehicular traffic plied normally for the second day. However, there were peaceful marches by students of schools and colleges demanding opening of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway.

Narayanan's visit to the valley was meant to assess security situation in the state following a Hurriyat-sponsored rally on Monday to the UN Observers' office in the highly-sensitive area.

There was some tension in Sopore township following the death of a youth who was critically injured in a road accident while heading to join the rally organised by separatists.

As his body was being taken to his home town, hundreds of slogan-shouting people turned up on the streets.

Some youths indulged in stone pelting at various places, forcing public transport to suspend the operations.

In Jammu, curfew was clamped and army deployed after 40 people were injured were injured in late night clashed in the city. The injured included nine policemen.

Some unidentified persons barged into the house of BJP state unit's General Secretary Ajay Jamwal and torched his vehicle. The party said the incident was to spread scare among the agitators calling for revoking the cancellation of Amarnath land transfer.

Barbed wire fences were put up by security forces in different parts of the city to stop people from defying curfew orders and courting arrests.

Meanwhile, authorities relaxed curfew in Samba district for nine hours from 5 am and in Kishtwar district for five hours from 7 am.
