Tennis: Sania pulls out of US Open

Thu-Aug 21, 2008

New York / Press Trust of India

After a heart-breaking Olympic debut at Beijing, Sania Mirza on Thursday pulled out of the US Open, as she is yet to recover from a nagging wrist injury.

The Hyederabadi player has been advised a three-week rest by her doctor while the fourth and last Grand Slam of the year kicks off from Monday.

"Sania Mirza has been advised complete rest for an initial period of three weeks by her consulting doctor after undergoing intensive tests," a press statement said.

Sania, who hurt her right wrist in March and was operated upon in April, was troubled again by the injury and had to concede her opening round match in the Olympics against Iveta Benesova of Czech Republic after trailing 1-6 1-2.

Earlier, she had also skipped entire clay court season including the French Open.

India's numero uno women's player said she was disappointed for not being able to participate in the elite event.

"I've always done well at the US Open and it is very disappointing for me to miss the Grand Slam on my favourite surface due to my wrist injury." she said.

With Sania out of contention, India will go unrepresented in the singles events this year as both Prakash Amritraj and Sunitha Rao have failed to qualify for the main draw of men's and women's events respectively.

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi will present Indian challenge in the doubles event at Flushing Meadows, although with different partners.
