Protesters on Thursday set afire four vehicles, attacked a government office and a senior Congress leader's vehicle and looted some 100 bags of wheat from a ration depot in Jammu region which remained on the edge over the Amarnath land transfer row.

In Kashmir valley, which remained by and large peaceful after weeks of unrest with vehicles plying on roads and shops doing normal business, separatists staged rallies at several places.

However, police burst teargas shells and resorted to mild cane-charge to scatter demonstrators at Munawarabad in Srinagar when they tried to march towards the local office of United Nations Military Observers Group.

No one was hurt in police action and no arrests were made, officials said.

Senior Congress leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma had a narrow escape when his vehicle was attacked by protesters with iron rods in Jammu city where day curfew was lifted today.

Stones were also hurled at the vehicle in Bhagwatinagar area, the officials said adding the incident happened when Sharma had gone to a doctor along with his grandson.

Security personnel, escorting Sharma, managed to rescue them.

Mobs set afire three vehicles near Bapu Assa Ram's Ashram in the same area, the officials said adding an Ambassador car of the Nehru Yuva Kendra was also torched.

Protesters looted some 100 bags of wheat (each weighing ten-kg) from a depot in Janipur locality in Jammu, the officials said.
