China sees red over US remarks on human rights

Beijing / Press Trust of India
China on Tuesday expressed its "dissatisfaction" over US comments on the sensitive issue of human rights and asked Washington to advise its citizens not to break the laws of other nations while touring abroad.
"We express our dissatisfaction to the remarks of the US side," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said, while resenting to the comments made by the White House spokesman that China missed an opportunity during the Olympics to demonstrate its willingness to be more open on the human rights front.
Qin said the Chinese government always endeavoured to safeguard and promote human rights of its citizens. He said China has been making efforts on the human rights front not because of the Olympics and such will not end because the Olympics concluded.
"Safeguarding and promoting human rights have been clearly stipulated in the Chinese constitution and as we continue to move towards this lofty goal," he told reporters in Beijing at a press briefing, the first after the Beijing Olympics ended on August 24.
Qin noted that during the Olympics, some foreigners engaged in promoting Tibet independence activities in Beijing.
Chinese police detained ten foreigners including eight Americans in Beijing last week for holding pro-Tibet demonstrations. The US nationals were deported on Sunday.
