Boxing: Former world champ stabbed to death

Tue-Aug 26, 2008

Vienna / Press Trust of India

Former World Athletic Association (WAA) light-middleweight boxing world champion Edip Sekowitsch died on Tuesday of multiple stab wounds outside a pub he owned in Vienna, Austrian media reported.

Police said they were questioning an injured man, who was apprehended near the crime scene but it was still unclear whether he was a suspect in the killing of Sekowitsch, 50.

The victim, born as Edip Secovic in Serbia, was one of Austria's most successful boxers.

In 1988, he was light-middleweight world champion of the World Athletic Association (WAA), which is not regarded as one of the major boxing organisations. One year later, he became the European Boxing Union (EBU) European champion in his weight class.

The former boxer, known in Austria as "the Serbian bull", owned the Champ's Pub in Vienna.
