Naxal attack kills 6 CRPF men in Chhattisgarh

Fri-Aug 29, 2008

Raipur / Press Trust of India

Six CRPF personnel, including an officer, were killed in a landmine attack by Naxals in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district on Friday.

The powerful Improvised Explosive Device blast blew up the CRPF jeep, which was on its way from Konda to Narayanpur near Chheribeda, about 350 km from Raipur, killing one sub inspector, four constables and a driver, CRPF officials told PTI from Narayanpur.

The officer killed in the blast has been identified as R S Kang.

While five personnel were killed on the spot another died on way to hospital, they said.

The incident took place when a convoy of three vehicles were proceeding with the CRPF Commandant Satpal Rawat from Kondagaon to Manjemata to inaugurate a school for the local villagers, the sources said.

The third vehicle of the convoy was badly damaged as it came in contact with the IED, they said.

It was the mistake of the "road opening party", top police sources said and added "before the vehicle of the Commandant passed a 'road opening party' had already passed through that road.

DGP Vishwa Ranjan said 'road opening party' should have searched the area thoroughly before proceeding further.
