European Union gives money for Bihar flood victims

Fri-Oct 17, 2008

Brussels / Indo-Asian News Service

The European Union (EU) has announced a grant of $4.71 million for Bihar flood victims, EUAsia News reported on Friday.

The fund will be channelled through EU's executive arm European Commission's partners in the area, NGOs and UN agencies, the Commission said in a statement Thursday.

In August, the Kosi river in Bihar burst its embankment and flooded vast tracts of the eastern Indian state and neighbouring Nepal.

Bihar's worst flood in 50 years has affected more than four million people, displaced some two million and destroyed an estimated 150,000 hectares of standing crops.

The Commission also announced a grant of $1.34 million for those in Nepal afflicted by the Kosi flood.
