Body of lies, an exposé of devious CIA ways
Sat-Oct 18, 2008
New Delhi / Nishtha Bhatnagar
MOVIE REVIEW: Body of Lies
RATING: * * *
Body of lies detours from the typical American self-eulogy of omnipotence to focus on the follies of American intelligence, it's complete lack of regard for Non-American lives, machinations and intellectual defeat at the hands of the so-called Islamic world. The movie looks inwards more than outside to reveal the deepest darkest functioning of the CIA, its modus operandi, successes and failures.
A CIA agent Roger Ferris (Leonardo Di Caprio) is operating in the middle east to unravel the future attacks of Abu Saleem (An Al Qaeda honcho) on America and other European countries. While Crowe masterminds and controls most of the operations, Caprio executes instructions and plans with the help of the local intelligence agencies and spys. Things come to a headway when caprio begins to lose credibility with the Jordanian intelligence and its head Hani (Mark Strong), after he is constantly bypassed in decisions by Crowe. While Crowe pulls the strings from his plush DC home where he lives a typical familial life and functions through his mobile headset, Caprio finds himself losing not only his reputation with those that have helped him but also his only friend Aisha, an Iranian nurse.
The movie reveals the dichotomy, contradictions and distrust within the CIA as they backstab each other and display complete lack of allegiance towards those who even play on their side. While the movie keeps the viewer on the edge, a rather unintelligent end mars this otherwise intelligent and introspective film.
