Heroes: An emotionally jarring tale of war and martyrdom

Sat-Oct 25, 2008

New Delhi / Nishtha Bhatnagar

A typical war movie with no war or battle scenes, Heroes explores another dimension of war cinema. While most of its predecessors concentrated on showing the valorous and heroic battles fought by the Indian army, Heroes concentrates on the lives of those whom the martyrs leave behind. An emotionally jarring tale of love, loss and pride, Heroes will surely make you salute the sacrifices of the defense forces.

The film starts with two insouciant and frivolous students of film making who decide to make a graduation film on the Indian army and whether or not one should join it. What starts as a frolicking trip up north for two flippant students waiting to get their certificates, turns into a journey of metamorphosis for them. As they deliver the final letters of three martyrs to their respective families, they experience conflicting emotions of both loss and pride rather closely only to find themselves in love with the idea of being in the Army.

While Sohail Khan and Vatsal Seth are convincing in their roleplay, Preity Zinta deserves a special mention for her short yet flawless performance of a war widow taking care of her poverty struck family. Sunny Deol , on the other hand, tends to over act as handicapped brother of a martyr. While the movie has a higher emotional quotient, it does raise certain significant issues.

What would have been a rather hard hitting emotional tale tends to disappoint with its length and extraneous scenes. After the first half, an irritation, with the copius presence of sentiments, sets in.
