Ganguly to take guard for the last time

New Delhi / NewsX Bureau

As the fourth and last Test match between India and Australia begins in Nagpur, curtains will come down on former captain Saurav Ganguly’s illustrious career spanning 12 years.

After making his debut with a bang at the Mecca of cricket – Lords – in 1996, the Prince of Kolkata has played many remarkable innings.

The left hander silenced more critics and won more fans than ever by his well-timed move to retire on a high and there will not be a soul in the world that wouldn't wish him that perfect farewell.

A spicy journey of 12 years will come to an end - one that would have seen 113 Tests, more than 7,000 runs and 16 heart-stopping centuries.

Passionate fans would want a decent 60 but their hearts will hope for a 17th hundred.

Hailed as India’s one of the most successful captains, Ganguly has seen many ups and downs. His spat with former coach Greg Chappell cost him his captaincy and subsequently a place in the Indian team.

However, proving his critics wrong, Ganguly fought his way back into the side and waited patiently to bid the game a graceful bye.

Indian cricket will remember this fighter as someone who inculcated a killer instinct in the Indian team.
