22 apprehended for setting several houses on fire in Manipur

Indian Army has apprehended 22 individuals involved in burning houses in Manipur’s Sanasabi, Gwaltabi, and Shabunkhol Khunao villages.

The Indian Army has apprehended 22 individuals involved in burning houses in Manipur’s Sanasabi, Gwaltabi, and Shabunkhol Khunao villages. The arrests were made in response to clashes reported from various areas in Manipur.

“In response to credible intelligence regarding armed individuals involved in the burning of houses in Sanasabi, Gwaltabi, and Shabunkhol Khunao villages in the YKPI Bowl area of Imphal East District, the Indian Army deployed units on May 28 to establish Mobile Vehicle Check Posts (MVCP) and conduct search operations in the region,” stated the Army. 

The statement added that the Army columns were fired upon by miscreants wielding automatic weapons while attempting to set houses on fire. During the operations, the Indian Army recovered five 12-bore double-barrel rifles, and three single-barrel rifles, as well as local weapons and war-like stores.

On Sunday, clashes erupted in various areas of Manipur, namely Sugnu in Kakching, Kangvi in Churachandpur, Kangchup in Imphal West, Sagolmang in Imphal East, Nungoipokpi in Bishenpur, Khurkhul in Imphal West, and YKPI in Kangpokpi. During the violence, five individuals, including a Manipur Police Officer, lost their lives.

Additionally, it was reported that a mob allegedly vandalized the house of a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA, and over 1,000 arms and ammunition were looted from the armouries of Manipur Rifles and IRB. Meanwhile, combined Central and state security forces have reportedly encountered and neutralized over 30 suspected Kuki terrorists within the state over the past 48 hours.

In an address to the media at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced on Sunday that security forces have taken decisive measures to address the wave of violent incidents and attacks on civilians in the state. He stated that approximately 40 “terrorists” have been neutralized thus far in these operations aimed at restoring peace and stability.
