In the latest development, four people lost their lives and more than hundred people have been injured in the cyclonic storm tearing apart West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri. Extremely strong winds have hit the district damaging homes and uprooting trees.

Amid the tension, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has departed for the affected region, and efforts for rescue and relief are currently underway.

“It is regrettable to learn that sudden heavy rainfall and stormy winds have resulted in disasters this afternoon in certain areas of Jalpaiguri-Mainaguri, leading to loss of lives, injuries, property damage, and the uprooting of trees and electricity poles. District and block authorities, along with police, DMG, and QRT teams, are actively engaged in disaster management operations to provide assistance,” tweeted CM Banerjee.

“Approximately 166 individuals arrived at the hospital with injuries, out of which 36 have been admitted, and tragically, 3 were pronounced dead. The total death toll now stands at 4,” stated BJP MP Jayanta Kumar Roy.

In the meantime, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has established an emergency cell in the Raj Bhavan to address the storm’s impact in Jalpaiguri.

“The Governor is coordinating closely with the Disaster Management Authority in Delhi, urging the NDMA to swiftly dispatch additional reinforcements in terms of manpower and resources to Jalpaiguri. Additionally, the Governor is maintaining communication with the Central Home Ministry. He plans to stay in Jalpaiguri tomorrow, visiting the affected areas firsthand and offering support to the victims,” announced the Raj Bhavan.
