On August 20, 2022, a special CBI court in Asansol rejected Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal’s plea for bail in connection with an alleged cattle smuggling scheme and extended his detention with the Central agency for an additional four days, until August 24.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) appealed an extension of Mr. Mondal’s custody, claiming that he is a “very powerful and highly influential person” who could “influence witnesses and tamper evidence” if released on bail.

Despite getting summonses ten times, the CBI lawyer claimed that Mr. Mondal has been “non-cooperative from the very beginning.”

The counsel further asserted that Mr. Mondal had pressured a doctor to recommend “complete rest.”

on August 11, Mr. Mondal was arrested by the CBI in connection with its investigation into the alleged cattle smuggling scam.
