The legendary Bhaichung Bhutia filed his nomination for the president’s post in the upcoming AIFF elections on Friday. Along with long-time sports administrators, some ex-footballers who are currently politicians and politicians who want to work in sports administration competing for the top position in the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

On Friday, the deadline for filing nominations for the position closed. On August 28, the long-delayed elections will take place.

Deepak Mondal, a former teammate on the national team, and Madhhu Kumari, “eminent woman player” both put out Bhutia’s name.

However, the electoral college must include former players if he is to be successful. FIFA statuettes currently forbid their existence. When the Supreme Court continues its hearing on the case on Monday, a clear picture will become visible.

The largest challenge to Bhutia will come from West Bengal-based BJP leader Kalyan Chaubey, a former goalkeeper for Mohun Bagan and East Bengal who has fought unsuccessfully in one general and one state assembly election.
