Gujarat government’s decision to pardon 11 defendants in Bilkis Bano case was contested before the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
After attorney Aparna Bhat requested an urgent listing on Wednesday, a bench led by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana decided to investigate the situation.
Senior attorney Kapil Sibal brought up the subject as well and stated, “Supreme Court granted the administration the authority to take it into consideration. Not Supreme Court’s order, but the remission is what we are disputing “.
Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Subhashini Ali, writer Revati Laul, and social activist and academic Roop Rekha Verma submitted the petition to the Supreme Court.
In a letter earlier that day, on August 19, Telangana MLC K Kavitha pleaded with Chief Justice of India NV Ramana to intervene in the issue of the release of 11 defendants in the Bilkis Bano rape case under the Gujarat government’s remission policy.
Earlier on August 15, the Gujarat government freed the 11 criminals who had been given life sentences.
In the meantime, all 11 of the case’s life-sentenced inmates were freed in accordance with Gujarat’s remission policy in effect at the time of their conviction in 2008.
Bano was reportedly gang-raped in March 2002 during the post-Godhra riots and left to die alongside 14 other family members, including her three-year-old daughter. When Vadodara rioters assaulted her family, she was five months pregnant.
