Bill Gates Applauds Prime Minister Modi's Leadership as G20 Agrees on the Importance of Digital Public Infrastructure

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and commended the G20 for achieving a significant consensus regarding the role of digital public infrastructure in accelerating progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Bill Gates stated, “The #G20 reached a groundbreaking consensus on the role of digital public infrastructure as a critical accelerator of the Sustainable Development Goals. I’m optimistic about the potential of DPI to support a safer, healthier, and more just world. Kudos to PM @narendramodi.”

Digital public infrastructure (DPI) encompasses essential building blocks and platforms like digital identity, payment systems, and data exchange solutions, which assist governments in delivering vital services to their citizens, empowering individuals, and enhancing lives through digital inclusion. DPIs are technology-enabled, interoperable, open, and inclusive platforms that play a pivotal role in advancing this inclusive digital transformation.

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar emphasized that the New Delhi Declaration, adopted by G20 leaders, focuses on promoting strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth while also aiming to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through this declaration, G20 leaders committed to expediting SDG progress by collectively implementing the G20 2023 Action Plan to Accelerate Progress on the SDGs, including its High-Level Principles. The declaration underscores the commitment to leaving no one behind and acknowledges the role of digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), data advancements, and addressing digital disparities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the adoption of the New Delhi G20 Leaders’ Summit Declaration, emphasizing the consensus reached during the two-day-long G20 Leaders Summit hosted by India. This summit marked the first time that the G20 convened under India’s presidency, which began on December 1 the previous year.

Established in 1999, the G20 was created to ensure global financial stability by incorporating middle-income countries into discussions. India’s presidency of the G20 reflects its commitment to addressing pressing global challenges and fostering international cooperation.
