The village of 1 No Murkata in central Assam’s Morigaon district’s Mayang revenue circle was teeming with inhabitants until September of this year. The settlement is no longer visible. The vast Brahmaputra River engulfed the entire region.
Houses belonging to 40-50 families, a school, two temples, and a government structure have all been destroyed in the last three months. Villagers were compelled to relocate to safer areas. According to residents, the river eroded an area of 300 metres along the river bank throughout the period.
“We had lost everything due to river erosion. The water ate our house, our property, everything. We have no idea where to go or what to eat. We are currently living in temporary huts built on other people’s property. What else are we going to do? We don’t have any land ” stated Golapi Mandal, a resident of 1 No. Murkata village.
Many of the people of that community have now relocated.
According to another local, Kalicharan Mandal, the Brahmaputra River has undermined 40-50 buildings in the area. He further added “The flood ate 1 No. Murkata Lower Primary and ME school, a Durga temple, a Namghar, a public hall, and a Kali temple. Now, 10-20 families are finding refuge in adjacent locations, while some have relocated. This year’s huge erosion began following the Durga Puja celebration.”
After the Brahmaputra River completely washed away the school building, the headmaster and other teachers of 1 No. Murkata Lower Primary School are currently operating the school from a makeshift shed built by the teachers. The school has 100 kids who are now learning in this temporary shelter that was built a few days ago.
