Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay tendered his resignation as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on March 5, announcing his intention to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

According to news agency ANI, he stated, “I will be joining the BJP, possibly on March 7. I am joining the BJP as it is a national party, which is fighting against the corruption of the TMC in Bengal.”

Gangopadhyay, who made public his decision to resign and enter politics two days earlier, submitted his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, with copies sent to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court TS Sivagnanam, as per sources.

He arrived at his chamber in the High Court complex in the morning to deliver the resignation letter.

Gangopadhyay, whose judgments on various educational matters in the state sparked political controversies and pitted him against the ruling Trinamool Congress, stated that he would address all inquiries regarding his resignation after submitting the letter. “I will resign from the post of Justice of Calcutta High Court on Tuesday,” he had announced on March 3.

In an interview with news agency ANI, Ganguly expressed his desire to serve the public, citing it as a calling of his conscience. “For the last two or more years, I have been dealing with some matters, especially education matters, regarding which a huge corruption has been discovered and unearthed. A large number of important persons in the education sector of this government are now languishing in jail, under trial,” he stated.

However the TMC MP Mahua Moitra has backlashed over the Calcutta High Court Judge and said on (X), “Thank you Justice Abhijit for exposing BJP….”
