In Canada’s Saskatchewan province, a stabbing spree on Sunday left at least 10 people dead and 15 injured, according to police. Police have started the search for two suspects.

According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore, officers responding to emergency calls discovered 10 bodies in the remote Indigenous community of James Smith Cree Nation and the neighboring town of Weldon, Saskatchewan.

She claimed that at least 15 further people had been hurt and sent to hospitals. She said, “We are actively looking for the two suspects.”

Miles and Damien Sanderson, brothers with dark hair and brown eyes, aged 30 and 31, respectively, have been identified as the suspected attackers. A local state of emergency was issued by the 2,500-person James Smith Cree Nation, and many Saskatchewan people were advised to stay indoors.

According to Blackmore, officials “think that some of the victims were targeted by the suspects and that other people were attacked randomly.”

“To speak to a motive would be extremely difficult at this point in time,” she added. According to Weldon resident Diane Shier, a man who lived with his grandson was killed in the attack.

Police responded to multiple stabbings in different areas in the Indigenous community and Weldon in the morning, leading Saskatchewan to issue a dangerous person alert.

Blackmore claimed that after receiving a call at 5:40 am (11:40 GMT) regarding a stabbing at the James Smith Cree Nation, police immediately got more calls reporting additional stabbings at a total of 13 different sites.

She added that several checkpoints have been set up on highways and roads around the region, as “maximum” police deployed to search for the suspects.

The alert and search were increased to cover nearby provinces of Manitoba and Alberta, a large area about half the size of Europe when sightings of the two men were reported in Regina, the provincial capital more than 185 miles to the south.
