According to sources, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided nine properties linked to Karti P Chidambaram, son of former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram.
The raids were carried out early Tuesday in nine locations in Chennai (3), Mumbai (3), Karnataka (1), Punjab (1), and Odisha (1) in connection with a case involving foreign remittances received by Karti between 2010 and 2014.
According to CBI sources, Karti allegedly received Rs 50 lakh from a man named Sabu.
According to sources, the CBI has opened a new investigation into Karti Chidambaram for issuing visas to Chinese citizens while he was Union Home Minister during the UPA-II administration.
Earlier this year, the CBI raided 16 properties linked to Karti P Chidambaram in a case involving foreign investment clearances granted to media firms by the Centre’s Foreign Investment Promotion Board in 2007 during the United Progressive Alliance’s rule. He is already being investigated for obtaining Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval for INX media.
On Twitter, Karti Chidambaram quickly responded to the raids, saying, “I have lost count, how many times has it been?” It has to be a record.”
The raid lasted about 15 minutes, according to CBI officials. However, CBI teams have returned to Chidambaram’s Delhi residence.
