The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) came under fire from the Congress on Saturday for publishing a mischievous post on a chat a Christian pastor had with former party president Rahul Gandhi when he was on his 3,570-kilometer Bharat Jodo Yatra.

The general secretary of the Congress in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, tweeted, “A horrible post from the BJP hate factory is going around. It has absolutely nothing to do with what was recorded in the audio. This is classic BJP mischief that has intensified due to its desperation following the successful commencement of the #BharatJodoYatra, which is receiving such an overwhelming amount of support.

This happened after Shehzad Poonawalla, the national spokesman for the BJP, tweeted a video showing Rahul speaking with George Ponnaiah, a Christian priest, and asking him, “Bharat Jodo with Bharat Todo icons?” According to Poonawalla, Ponnaiah has previously been detained for “Hindu bigotry.”

So Jesus Christ is a type of God, Rahul asks a gathering of people in the video. Is that accurate? The priest replies, “He’s a genuine God… God makes him known as a man, a fellow human distinct from Shakti or this force.

Ramesh tweeted in retaliation to the BJP, saying, “Persons who were involved in the death of Mahatma Gandhi and the killings of people like Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare, MM Kalburgi, and Gauri Lankesh are raising questions! What an awful joke! Attempts to undermine the Bharat Jodo Yatra’s spirit, he said, will fall short.

Rahul is now on the third day of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which started in Mulagumoodu in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu.
