Delhi Authorities detained a total of 60 Congress MPs on Friday during the party’s protest against the federal government over the concerns of inflation, price increases, GST, and unemployment, according to police.

However, according to Congress national secretary Jairam Ramesh, they were eventually released after around six hours. Those held by the Police were Rahul Gandhi, Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

Jairam Ramesh posted a tweet that read, “Congress MPs have just been freed after being imprisoned for approximately 6 hours for demonstrating peacefully and democratically against price hike, unemployment, and GST.”

The demonstrations took place around Delhi, especially on Akbar Road, at Vijay Chowk, and at Jantar Mantar.

Delhi Police further stated in a statement that 335 protestors in all, including 65 MPs, had been taken into custody in accordance with the Delhi Police Act in order to preserve peace and order in the region.

“Today’s demonstration in Delhi was organised by Congress supporters. In Delhi, orders made according to Section 144 CrPC are also in effect. The protesters manhandled and harmed the police officers as they attempted to prevent them from carrying out their responsibilities. Legal action is being taken as necessary, “Police stated.

According to the police, notification of the MP and MLA’s custody is being forwarded to the appropriate responsible authorities.

Police also stated, the demonstrators were repeatedly asked to leave the area after being properly told about the prohibitory orders that were in effect there.

They did, however, carry on with the demonstration in violation of section 144 CrPC’s prohibitory orders.
