A former adviser to Barack Obama, Stuart Seldowitz, is under scrutiny after a viral video captured him engaging in an Islamophobic rant directed at a Halal cart vendor in New York. The incident, reported by The Hill has sparked outrage.

In the video shared, Seldowitz can be seen harassing the unidentified food vendor, and hurling anti-Palestinian comments and insults. He referred to the Halal Cart vendor as a “terrorist” and made derogatory remarks concerning the Israel-Hamas conflict.

A Columbia University student shared the footage, quickly gaining widespread attention. Subsequently, a second video surfaced, showcasing Seldowitz making similar offensive comments.

Following the incident, Gotham Government Relations, a Washington, D.C.-based lobbying firm, swiftly severed ties with Seldowitz. In a statement released Tuesday, the firm announced, “Gotham Government Relations has ended all affiliation with Stuart Seldowitz, an individual who hasn’t contributed to our work in years.” The firm went on to condemn Seldowitz’s comments as “racist” and stated that the video of his actions is “vile, racist, and beneath the dignity of the standards we practice at our firm.”

Seldowitz, who served as the acting director for the National Security Council South Asia Directorate under the Obama administration, and Deputy Director in the US State Department’s Office of Israel and Palestinian Affairs from 1999 to 2003, joined Gotham Government Relations last year as its foreign affairs chair.

The incident comes amid escalating tensions in the Israel-Hamas conflict, contributing to a surge in anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in the United States. The conflict intensified after an October 7 attack by Hamas, where approximately 2,500 militants breached the border into Israel from the Gaza Strip, resulting in casualties and the seizure of hostages.

Hamas reportedly seized around 240 hostages during the assault, crossing Gaza’s militarized border into southern Israel. The attack led to the tragic loss of approximately 1,200 lives, primarily civilians who were massacred at their homes and while fleeing a music festival, according to The Times of Israel.

Seldowitz’s Islamophobic remarks have ignited a broader conversation about the impact of geopolitical conflicts on communities in the United States, with many condemning his actions as detrimental to the principles of tolerance and diversity.
