GN Azad resigns from Cong, says "Rahul Gandhi, or his guards, took decisions"

Ghulam Nabi Azad lauded Sonia Gandhi in a lengthy resignation letter while blaming her son Rahul for the Congress’s loss in the 2014 presidential election.

Rahul Gandhi was criticised for his “glaring immaturity” and for “demolishing the consultative mechanism” in the party by Ghulam Nabi Azad, a veteran of the Congress and former Union Minister, who announced his resignation from the party today.

Ghulam Nabi Azad was an influential member of the G-23, often known as the group of 23 “dissenters,” who wrote to Sonia Gandhi in 2020 demanding a radical reorganization of the organization and a permanent and outward-facing leadership.

In a lengthy letter of resignation, he lauded Sonia Gandhi while criticising her son Rahul for the Congress’s loss in the 2014 presidential election, which marked a turning point for the party and has since made it difficult to win elections.

Unfortunately, after Rahul Gandhi entered politics and in particular after you named him vice president in January 2013, he destroyed the entire consultation structure that had previously been in place, according to Mr. Azad.

He claimed that all senior and knowledgeable party leaders had been removed, and a “new coterie of inexperienced sycophants” had taken over the reins of the organisation.

He claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s destruction of government property in front of the cameras was one of the most obvious signs of his immaturity.

“The Congress has suffered humiliating defeats in both of the Lok Sabha elections since you took office in 2014, followed by Rahul Gandhi. Out of the 49 assembly elections held between 2014 and 2022, it came in last in 39 of them. Only four of the state elections were won by the party, and in six of those, it was successful in forming coalitions. Unfortunately, the Congress currently has power in just two states and only plays a relatively minor coalition partner in the other two.”

Azad claimed that since the 2019 presidential election, things within the party had only become worse. “You took over as acting president after Rahul Gandhi resigned in a “huff” but not before denigrating all the senior party officials who have sacrificed their lives for the party during a meeting of the extended working committee. a position you’ve had for the last three years and still do today. Even worse, the Indian National Congress was subjected to the same “remote control approach” that destroyed the institutional integrity of the UPA government. All major decisions were made while you acted as merely a ceremonial figurehead by Shri Rahul Gandhi, or far worse, by his bodyguards and personal helpers.”
