A female IAS officer came up with a very discourteous reply to a young female student when she was informing her about the ongoing government schemes to eradicate gender inequality at a workshop.

Harjot Kaur, IAS, is the managing director of the Women Development Corporation.

The female student raised the concern about the government not providing any sanitary napkins, to which the IAS officer replied, “There is a demand for sanitary pads worth Rs 20–30 from the government. What deterrence has to be given when it comes to family planning?”

She further said, “Why is there a habit of taking everything from the government? Do something yourself. There is no end to demands. One day there will be demands for jeans and pants the other day for beautiful shoes.’

One female student from Miller School said that boys enter due to the broken toilet, therefore they drink less water so that they don’t have to go to the loo often. IAS officer Kaur asked the girl whether she had a separate toilet in her house or not. She said, “If you ask for a lot, how will it work?”

In the light of this incident that took place in Patna, Social Welfare Department Minister Madan Sahni said that the way in which Harjot Kaur opted to reply to the girl child’s questions was wrong. They should inform the kids about the schemes that the government has for them.

Such answers are discouraging for the children, said Minister Sahni. It is the duty of the officers to promote schemes and not to speak in the wrong manner. Respectful language is expected from a senior officer, added Minister Sahni.
