Indian and Chinese troops completed the disengagement process at a disputed area along a remote western Himalayan border.
The disengagement process in the Gogra Heights-Hot Springs area between the two armies began on Thursday, September 8 after the discussions between the two sides during the 16th round of corps commander level. The process involved front-line troops moving back to rear locations, dismantling temporary infrastructure, and joint verification to assess the full implementation of the disengagement to follow.
“The two sides have agreed to cease forward deployments in a phased, coordinated, and verified manner, resulting in the return of the troops to their respective areas,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said. “All temporary structures in the area erected by both militaries will also be dismantled,” he further added.
The disengagement process comes ahead of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Uzbekistan this week on September 15-16 which will be attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
