Two 17-year-old schoolchildren who had been missing for two weeks were discovered dead in a roadside ditch in the Basanti neighbourhood of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Atanu Dey and Abhishek Naskar, two youths, were allegedly strangled to death by a neighbour and his helpers over a money dispute.

Since August 22, the boys from Kolkata’s Baguihati neighbourhood have been missing. Four people have been detained by the police in connection with the crime, while two others, including the main suspect, Satyendra Chaudhuri, are still at large.

Police said that after killing the victims, the accused called for a ransom from their families. Abhijit Bose (age 25), Samim Ali (20), Sahil Molla (20), and Dibyendu Das have been named as the suspects.

According to a preliminary investigation, the accused and the victims disagreed about a motorcycle purchase price of Rs. 50,000. According to the police, Atanu gave Chaudhuri Rs 50,000 to buy him a motorcycle. The issue started when Atanu demanded his money back, according to the police, who added that even after several months, the accused still didn’t buy the two-wheeler or refund the money.
