A lawyer has moved the Sri Lankan Supreme Court seeking the arrest of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa for allegedly conspiring to commit criminal intimidation and abetting an attack on a peaceful protest in front of Temple Trees and Galle Face earlier this week. Besides Rajapaksa, the lawyer has also sought direction from the apex court to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for the arrest of six other persons in the matter.
As per a Mirror Daily report, a personal complaint has been lodged before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court by a lawyer requesting to direct the CID for the arrests of the seven individuals over violent clashes at the Galle Face protest site that resulted in injuries to more than 100 protesters last Tuesday. The clashes resulted in a nationwide curfew with the country’s tri forces ordered to shoot at sight all those who plunder public property or cause personal harm.
Meanwhile, a travel ban has been imposed on Mahinda Rajapaksa after his resignation as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. The travel ban has also been imposed on Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son and former Minister Namal Rajapaksa, Johnston Fernando, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, C B Rathnayake, Sanath Nishantha, and Sanjeewa Edirimanne, among others, News Wire reported citing sources.
