Lt Gen Asim Munir named Pakistan's New Army Chief

The appointment of Lt Gen Asim Munir as the next chief of army staff of Pakistan on Thursday put an end to weeks of heated political wrangling and speculative conjecture in the nation.

Using his constitutional authority, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has chosen to name Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir as Chief of the Army Staff, according to a tweet from the country’s Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb. A summary of the same, according to Aurangzeb, has been submitted to Pakistani President Arif Alvi.

The summary from the Ministry of Defence with a “panel of names” for the nomination of the new COAS was received by Pakistan’s government and was verified on Wednesday.

“The summary from the Ministry of Defence with a list of candidates for the positions of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of the Army Staff has been delivered to the PM office. The appointments will be decided by the Prime Minister in accordance with the established system, “the statement from the office of the prime minister of Pakistan read.

After receiving a three-year extension, Gen. Bajwa, 61, is scheduled to retire the following week.

Defense Minister of Pakistan Khawaja Asif stated on Tuesday that the summary has been sent from the defence ministry to the PMO. He tweeted, “The remaining steps will be finished shortly.”

Imran Khan, the head of the opposition and a former prime minister has been warned by Pakistan’s defence minister that the coalition government will deal with him following the selection of the next Army chief.

“It will take two to three days to complete the process. The thrill ride will end, and then we’ll talk about Imran Khan, “The media agency cited the Pakistani defence minister as saying.

He hinted at the formal announcement of the important appointment within the following three days when he made these comments on the floor of the Pakistan National Assembly.

This comes after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif requested a list of probable candidates in a letter to the nation’s Defense Ministry on Monday, which marked the beginning of the process to name the new army chief.
