MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu and DMK supremo, was elected as the party’s president for the second time on Sunday, according to official sources.
Arcot Veeraswamy, senior leader of the DMK and a former minister, declared his choice today. Durai Murugan and T.R. Balu, meanwhile, have been chosen as the DMK’s general secretary and treasurer, respectively, for the second time.
Kanimozli, an MP and secretary of the DMK Women’s Wing, was proposed to be the party’s deputy general secretary. Subbulakshmi Jagadhesan formerly held the portfolio. She withdrew from the party’s primary membership last month.
Following votes for party positions at various levels throughout the state, the DMK’s 15th organisational polls saw the election of the party president, general secretary, and treasurer.
The 69-year-old top official, who is the younger son of late party founder M Karunanidhi, has held a number of positions inside the organisation, including those of DMK treasurer and youth wing secretary.
In 2018, Mr. Stalin was unanimously chosen to lead the party when Mr. Karunanidhi passed away. The DMK’s second president is Mr. Stalin.
In 1969, Mr. Karunanidhi was elected as the DMK’s first president, marking the establishment of the position within the organisation.
C N Annadurai, the founder of the DMK and a symbol of the Dravidian movement, held the position of party general secretary until his death in 1969. In 1949, the DMK was established.
