The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has elected MLC Chandrashekhar Bawankule as state unit president and MLA Ashish Shelar as Mumbai city unit president.
Former Energy Minister Bawankule. He was refused a ticket to run in the 2019 assembly elections. As the MLC, he now represents the state legislative council.
Similarly, Shelar, a Maratha by caste, took over as Mumbai unit president from Mangal Prabhat Lodha. Lodha was also appointed to the freshly sworn-in cabinet of Maharashtra’s BJP-Shiv Sena coalition.
The selection of Bawankule shows the BJP’s efforts to consolidate backward community support in the state as it prepares for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
