Neeraj Chopra, a Tokyo Olympics gold medalist, won the javelin throw competition at the Lausanne Diamond League on Friday with the best throw of 89.08m.

Chopra became the first Indian to win the prestigious Diamond League Meeting title with his best throw of the event in Lausanne. Neeraj has thus qualified for the Diamond League Finals, which will be held on September 7 and 8 in Zurich, Switzerland. He has also qualified for the World Championships in 2023.

On the day, Neeraj’s throw sequence was 89.08m, 85.18m, he skipped the third attempt, and he fouled in the fourth. He also skipped his fifth attempt before throwing a stunning 80.04m in his sixth and final attempt.

Jakub Valejch of the Czech Republic finished second with a throw of 85.88m, while Curtis Thompson of the USA finished third with a throw of 83.72m.

Neeraj Chopra, India’s star javelin thrower, was ruled out of the Commonwealth Games earlier this month. Neeraj suffered a groyne injury in the finals of the World Athletics Championships in Oregon on Sunday, where he won the silver medal, ending India’s 19-year medal drought.

Neeraj won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. He also stated that he is devastated that he will be unable to defend his title.
