Pawan Khera, Congress leader, criticizes BJP for attempting to sow discord between Bharat and India

Opposition leaders within the INDIA bloc alleged that the BJP’s discomfort with this nomenclature change was the cause of the dispute. In contrast, BJP leaders expressed strong support for the government’s choice of wording in the formal G20 dinner invitations.

Pawan Khera, a prominent member of the Congress party, voiced his concerns on Thursday, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is attempting to sow discord between “Bharat” and India. He emphasized that the Indian populace is cognizant of these efforts by the BJP and can readily identify those responsible for such divisive actions. Khera made these remarks during a press briefing held in Delhi.

In response to comments from opposition parties regarding the invitations for a G20 dinner scheduled for September 9, which were sent on behalf of the ‘President of Bharat’ instead of India, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar made a subtle reference. He pointed out that the term “Bharat” is incorporated in the Constitution and carries a distinct meaning and significance. In an exclusive interview, Jaishankar addressed questions regarding the reaction of opposition parties and whether the government intends to reposition India as “Bharat” in conjunction with the G20 summit.

Jaishankar asserted, “When we refer to ‘Bharat,’ it carries a particular sense, meaning, and connotation that is also reflected in our Constitution.”

This naming controversy arose when formal invitations for the G20 dinner were issued in the name of the ‘President of Bharat’ rather than India. Opposition leaders within the INDIA bloc alleged that the BJP’s discomfort with this nomenclature change was the cause of the dispute. In contrast, BJP leaders expressed strong support for the government’s choice of wording in the formal G20 dinner invitations.
