One of the six defendants in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, Nalini Sriharan was freed from Vellore prison on Saturday evening.

Six people convicted of the murder of the former Prime Minister, including Nalini Sriharan and RP Ravichandran, were ordered to be released by Supreme Court on Friday. Convits had been given a life sentence in this case.

The decision for freeing these convicts was made after taking into account the inmates’ excellent behaviour in the prison by a bench consisting of BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna.

The 31-year-old Indian prisoner with the longest sentence, Nalini was brought to Vellore Prison to finish the necessary paperwork for her release.

After being freed, defendant in Rajiv Gandhi murder case was seen grinning and waving to reporters as she was led to a police van. According to Supreme court ruling, they had spent a very long time in prison.

Following the bench’s order, request for their release was granted “As a result, applicants are instructed to be released unless they are otherwise wanted. Consequently, matter was disposed of.”

Supreme Court said, “Nalini has been imprisoned for more than three decades, and she has behaved well during that time. She is a computer application graduate. Additionally, Ravichandran’s behaviour has been deemed acceptable, and although he has been detained, he has pursued a number of academic endeavours, including a PG diploma in the arts. Additionally, he has raised a variety of sums for charity.”

Along with Nalini, other defendants in the lawsuit are Ravichandran, Robert Payas, Jayakumar, S. Raja, and Shriharan.

One of the seven people convicted in the assassination case, AG Perarivalan, was released from prison on May 18 when the Supreme Court invoked its exceptional powers under Article 142 of the Constitution.
