Ram Rahim granted 40-day parole, reaches Baghpat

Rahim was granted a 40-day parole and freed from Sunaria prison on Saturday. He entered Baghpat with the help of security.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the leader of Dera Sacha Sauda, arrived at the ashram in Barnawa, Uttar Pradesh, where he is serving a prison sentence after being found guilty of rape and murder.

Rahim was granted a 40-day parole and freed from Sunaria prison on Saturday. He entered Baghpat with the help of security.

The family of the Dera leader had applied for his month-long release through the prison authorities.

Earlier on June 17, Rahim received a month’s worth of parole.

Since 2017, Singh has been detained in Haryana’s Sunaria jail, where he is completing a 20-year sentence for the rape of two female devotees in the Sirsa headquarters of his ashram.

The Dera leader received a three-week leave of absence earlier in February.

A furlough is a brief temporary release of prisoners from jail, whereas parole refers to the release of a prisoner either temporarily for a specified purpose or totally before the expiration of a sentence, on the promise of good behaviour.

In August 2017, a special CBI court in Panchkula found him guilty of raping two of his devotees.

On the other hand, the court found Rahim and four other defendants guilty in connection with the murder of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh on October 8, 2021.

In 2002, Ranjit Singh was killed on the grounds of Dera Sacha Sauda.

On directions from the High Court of Punjab and Haryana in 2003, the CBI had filed the case and taken over the investigation of a case that had previously been filed at Police Station Sadar in Kurukshetra.

It was claimed that on July 10, 2002, Ranjit Singh, a native of the hamlet of Khanpur Kolian in the Kurukshetra district of Haryana, was killed while tending to his fields.

Following a comprehensive investigation, the CBI submitted a charge sheet against six suspects in 2007 and charges were framed in 2008. One defendant passed away on October 10, 2020, during the course of the trial, and the case against him was dropped.

Later on October 8, 2021, the court found the aforementioned defendants guilty and found them guilty.
