In the meeting, it was announced that there is a target to encompass approximately 60% of the wheat-growing area with climate-adapted varieties this year.

New Delhi, 24 November 2023, Today, a crop review meeting was convened at Krishi Bhawan, chaired by Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shri Narendra Singh Tomar. In the meeting, it was announced that there is a target to encompass approximately 60% of the wheat-growing area with climate-adapted varieties this year. The adoption of such varieties is expected to enhance production stability. Minister Shri Tomar recommended the establishment of a monitoring committee to ensure the realization of this objective.

In discussions concerning the performance and anticipated yield of Kharif crops, it was highlighted that the delayed onset of monsoon and reduced rainfall in August adversely impacted crop growth. However, the normal monsoon rains experienced in most states during September mitigated the adverse effects, and it is anticipated that Kharif production will not be significantly hampered.

In the context of Rabi sowing, officials from the department conveyed in the meeting that the soil moisture levels are favorable, facilitating seamless progress in sowing activities. Rabi cultivation typically spans an average of 648.33 lakh hectares, with approximately 248.59 lakh hectares already sown at present. Particularly in the case of wheat, there is a targeted coverage of about 60% of the area with specific varieties this year. The adoption of such varieties is expected to enhance production stability. The department will promptly act on the suggestion put forth by Agriculture Minister Shri Tomar to establish a monitoring committee to achieve this objective.
