Here's How Next UK PM Will Be Picked

To become the new leader of the Conservative Party, currently in power in the UK, candidates must first receive the support of 100 MPs.

Rishi Sunak, a former finance minister, is now leading the race to succeed Liz Truss as the next prime minister of the United Kingdom, but the road ahead is fraught with challenges.

The first stage is to win over 100 MPs, of which he now has 122, according to the news outlet’s tracker as of Saturday night at 11.30 p.m., India time. The Conservative Party has 357 MPs. This was tallied from the 198 Conservative MPs who publicly declared their support.

On this tracker, Boris Johnson, whose supporters claim he has crossed 100, was at position 53. The Speaker of the Commons, Penny Mordaunt, was 23 years old. However, a person close to Mr. Johnson who spoke to Britain’s most prestigious news sites said that he has 100 supporters. Therefore, an eligible candidate in the race to become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom.

When it comes to using social media for campaigning, Penny Mordaunt has an advantage over the competition. She shared a video of “The Real Me” on her website to demonstrate her understanding of the expense of life.

The shortest term for a UK prime minister, Liz Truss was forced to quit on her 45th day in office because her proposals for tax cuts could not be implemented since it was unclear how she would pay for them. After three years in office, Boris Johnson resigned in July due to a slew of controversies, including partying during the Covid lockdown.

Here’s how the procedure moves forward.

A leadership poll should be conducted “within the next week,” Liz Truss declared, in agreement with the 1922 Committee, the party committee that determines the terms of the leadership campaign.

The deadline for nominations is Monday, October 24. According to the criteria as outlined on the UK Parliament website, the 100 nominations needed to appear on the final ballot may be filed either physically or by email.

Following the MPs’ vote, the top two candidates will appear on a party member’s online ballot. (Rishi Sunak was elaborating on this before.) This procedure will be finished by October 28.

However, if two candidates win Stage 1, which involves the votes of the MPs, Stage 2 will involve the votes of the party members. The winner is whoever receives the most votes in this case. The party does not always make the rules and figures available to the public.

According to party regulations, only members who have been active for at least three months previous to the voting deadline are eligible to cast a ballot.

Members in the UK have the option of voting by mail or online in the most recent contest, which Liz Truss won over Rishi Sunak. Members from abroad could only cast electronic ballots. For a speedier outcome, it is anticipated that the entire system would be up this time.

The general election in the UK is scheduled for December 2024.
