On the first day of his three-day visit to India, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will pay respect to the victims of the 26/11 terror attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai on Tuesday.
It will be Guterres’ first visit to India since his second term began in January. He had already visited the nation in October 2018, during his first tenure as President.
On October 20, the UN Secretary General will join Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) event in Gujarat’s Kevadiya.
His visit comes more than a week before the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee meets in India for two days.
“The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, will pay an official visit to India from October 18 to 20,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced.
Guterres will begin his tour to India by paying respect to the victims of the 26/11 terror attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai, according to the statement.
The Taj Mahal Palace hotel was one of the tragic targets of the 2008 terrorist attacks on September 26th.
Guterres will also make a public talk on the topic “India @75: UN-India Partnership: Strengthening South-South Cooperation” at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will undertake bilateral conversations with Guterres on global problems, as part of attempts to expand India’s participation with the UN, including the country’s future G20 leadership.
On October 20, Guterres will attend the introduction of the Mission LiFE brochure, logo, and tagline in Kevadiya.
Modi proposed the notion of LiFE at the COP26 in Glasgow in November.
Guterres is set to offer floral tributes at the Statue of Unity in Kevadiya, according to the MEA, and will also visit the country’s first solar-powered hamlet in Modhera (Gujarat), as well as other development initiatives in the area.
According to the MEA, the UN Secretary General will also visit the Sun Temple in Modhera before heading for his next destination.
