On Friday, the Uttarakhand government declared that the Uniform Civil Code would be implemented in the state.
“We’ve decided to put the Uniform Civil Code into effect in the state. After Goa, Uttarakhand will be the second state to do so “Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister, stated.
During his Champawat speech, Dhami promised, “We will offer UCC to the people, regardless of their faith or socio-economic status.”
Earlier on May 2, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur declared that the UCC would be implemented soon in the state.
However, the UCC has stirred disagreement in numerous states, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently stating that the UCC should be adopted in the greater interest of Muslim women, or else polygamy would persist.
Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) labeled the law “unconstitutional and anti-minorities,” and said the rhetoric behind it was an attempt by the Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and central governments to deflect attention away from inflation, the economy, and rising unemployment.
Notably, in its 2019 Lok Sabha election manifesto, the Bharatiya Janata Party committed to implementing UCC if elected.
