NCP leader Jayant Patil slams BJP for granting permissions to build Yakub Memon's grave

Nationalist Congress Party leader Jayant Patil on Friday poked fun at the Bharatiya Janata Party and claimed that the permissions to construct the grave were granted during BJP’s rule amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the “beautification” of Yakub Memon’s grave, which is located in Mumbai’s Bada Qabrastan and is where he was convicted of the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

“It’s crucial to check what administration gave the go-ahead for the construction of his burial. When the BJP controlled both the federal government and Maharashtra, his tomb was constructed. They are to blame for it (BJP), “said Jayant Patil, state president of the NCP.

His comments came after on September 8 the issue of beautifying Yakub Memon’s burial in Mumbai’s Bada Qabrastan, a prisoner of the 1993 Mumbai bombings, came to light.

Following a controversy over Yakub Memon’s tomb decoration, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated earlier on Friday that the 1993 Mumbai explosion defendant is a suspect in the Bombay Blast and cannot be honoured.

While addressing the media in Mumbai, Memon claimed “Yakub Memon is a defendant in the Bombay Blast and cannot be exalted. This will not be tolerated or allowed to occur. I’ve let the Mumbai Police and BMC know about it, and the Home Ministry will take the necessary steps.”

Earlier on Thursday Shinde had promised harsh action in relation to the “beautification” of Yakub Memon’s cemetery, which is located in Mumbai’s Bada Qabrastan.
