The Delhi High Court on Friday ruled that WhatsApp cannot share its user data with Facebook before September 25.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday ruled that WhatsApp cannot share its user data with its parent company Facebook before September 25.

The ruling came after WhatsApp announced last month that it is going to share some of user’s information with Facebook.

The Delhi High Court intervened in the matter after two students Karmanya Singh Sareen and Shreya Sethi approached it last month. They expressed privacy concerns about changes in WhatsApp’s privacy policy, accusing it of “endangering” privacy of millions of users, and “severely compromising the rights of its users.”

A bench of Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court ordered WhatsApp to delete the existing data of the users who chose to opt out of WhatsApp’s policy changes before September 25.

The court also asked WhatsApp not to share the user information with Facebook before September 25, even for those who are not opting out of WhataApp’s new policy.

The new policy of the instant messaging platform WhatsApp will come into effect from September 25.
