- Left-handed batsman Shikhar Dhawan has replaced fellow opener Murali Vijay in India’s 16-man squad for the three-match Test series vs Sri Lanka starting July 26. Vijay was ruled out due to the resurfacing of a wrist injury that had troubled him throughout the home Test series vs Australia earlier this year. The 31-year-old Dhawan, who has played 23 Tests and 86 ODIs, was originally left out despite his impressive form in the ICC Champions Trophy where he was the top scorer with 338 runs. It will now be a battle between Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund over who will partner KL Rahul at the top of the order in Vijay’s absence.
- England Test captain Joe Root has hit out at former captain Michael Vaughan over the latter’s criticism of the England Test team. In the aftermath of the 340-run loss to South Africa at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, Vaughan had called England’s batting appalling and suggested it was due to lack of respect for Test cricket. Responding to Vaughan, Root said that his comment was totally unfair but admitted that England had played very poorly. However, ex-England captains Nasseer Hussain and Geoff Boycott were also among those to condemn the team’s performance.
- New India head coach Ravi Shastri has recommended to the BCCI that Bharat Arun be appointed as the team’s bowling coach. Arun, who has played with Shastri both for India and India Under-19, has already served as bowling coach of the team; this was during Shastri’s tenure as the team director from August 2014 to March 2016. Shastri reportedly put forward Arun’s name for bowling coach during a meeting with BCCI CEO Rahul Johri in Mumbai on Monday. However, the final decision on bringing back Arun and retaining batting coach Sanjay Bangar and fielding coach R Sridhar rests with the Committee of Administrators.
