The 51-year-old dentist fled to Canada when suspicions arose and strongly fought against extradition to France in 2014. He was later extradited back to France.

Van Nierop who is charged with mutilation, fraud, forgery and false billing faces a possible sentence of 10 years in prison and a 150,000-euro ($165,000) fine.

According to a report, while he is not obliged to offer a plea under French law, van Nierop has previously argued that he suffers from “psychological problems”.
