ROME: About 700 people are feared dead after a fishing boat carrying migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea at midnight local time on Saturday, the United Nation officials said.
According to the reports, a rescue operation is underway and at least 28 people have been rescued so far but the number of victims is unknown.
Confirming the incident, the Italian official said that navy vessels were involved in the operation.
Carlotta Sami, a spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, told reporters, “At the moment, we fear that this is a tragedy of really vast proportions.”
It is believed that the boat capsized when migrants moved to one side of the vessel when another ship approached.
Last week, almost 400 people were feared dead when a boat capsized.
