New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday called on Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom here before formal talks.

“The week begins with Maldives. EAM @SushmaSwaraj calls on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom before formal talks,” foreign ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup said in a tweet.

Yameen, who is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day, is on a two-day trip to India. He was among the SAARC leaders who had attended Modi’s swearing-in in May, 2014.

Earlier, Swaraj had visited Maldives in November 2014 and again in October 2015 for the India-Maldives Joint Commission, held after 15 years.

Yameen would also call on President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday.

Yameen was amongst the SAARC leaders who attended the swearing in of the present Government in May 2014.

The External Affairs Minister visited Maldives in November 2014 and again in October 2015 for the India-Maldives Joint Commission, which was held after fifteen years.
